How to prep your bathroom for a new shower

You do not need to do everything on this list. Think of it as a friendly guide, and we will tell you if there is anything specific for your home.

In the bathroom

• Take everything out of the tub and shower area: bottles, razors, mats, caddies and rods.
• Clear the vanity top and anything on shelves or hooks close to the shower.
• Take down wall art, mirrors or towel bars near the shower, if you can.
• Move rugs, hampers and small furniture out of the room.

Getting in and out of the house

• Clear a path from the door to the bathroom, wide enough to carry materials.
• Make room to park near the house for a work vehicle.
• Move breakable things out of the hallway.

People, pets and plans

• Plan for pets. A quiet room with the door closed, or a friend who can take them for the day, is easiest.
• If this is your only bathroom, plan where you will wash up and use a toilet while the work is going on. The install typically takes about two days.
• Put medications and valuables somewhere safe.

Things worth telling us

• Any leaks, soft spots in the floor or old repairs you know about.
• Where your main water shut-off is, if you know.
• Who will use the shower and what they need: a seat, a grab bar, a handheld shower or a certain height.
