What does a walk-in shower cost?

A plain-language guide to what goes into the price, what can change it, and what a lower-cost route looks like.

Take your time. Never feel pressured to decide quickly.

The short answer

Our walk-in showers start at $9,600, and our tub showers start at $10,000. Those are starting points, not a quote. Your price depends on your bathroom, and Dawson sends your exact number after Chris has seen it.

What goes into the price of any shower

A shower is several parts working together. When you compare prices, it helps to see each part listed:

  • Walls. The surround you see and touch every day.
  • The shower base. The floor of the shower, including a low step-in.
  • The valve and fixtures. Showerhead, handheld, controls.
  • The door or curtain. A way to keep the water in.
  • Labor. Taking out the old tub or shower, the plumbing, the install and the clean-up.
  • Safety extras. A seat, grab bars, niches or shelves, if you want them.

What can change the price

  • Size and layout. A larger shower, or a different shape, takes more material and time.
  • Wall finish. Some patterns and colors cost more than others.
  • Seat, grab bars and niches. Each one is a choice you can add or leave off.

What it costs with us

Walk-in showers start at $9,600. That includes replacing an existing tub with a walk-in shower, which is priced the same way. If you would like to keep a tub, our tub showers start at $10,000.

You can see a price for your own bathroom in about two minutes with Build Your Shower. You can also read more on our walk-in showers and tub showers pages.

Is there a less expensive way?

Yes, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Home Depot, Menards and Lowe’s all sell good three-piece fiberglass or acrylic shower units. With a reputable handyman to install one, that route is likely about $6,000 to $7,000, and possibly less.

That is Dawson’s rough guess, in our experience, and it is not a quote. Ours is a different, higher-quality system, which is why it costs more. The do-it-yourself route also takes more legwork, since finding, scheduling and checking on the right installer is up to you. Either can be a fine choice. Pick the one that fits your budget and your comfort.
